The very first thing you should think about is the hosting and the domain name for your website. When choosing the hosting company, compare the pricing and pay attention to what’s included into the hosting offer. If you’re just a start up, even the simplest package will work for you perfectly. It’s pretty convenient to buy the domain name from that same hosting provider, but if you have the name already, that’s not a problem. It’s just that you’ll have to wait for another 2-3 days for your domain name to “set up” with the new hosting. It’s always better to speak with support people to make sure that the host works for you (and to make sure there’s actually a support team BTW, if your don’t know what a hosting is, in short that’s a place on a remote computer (called server) where your website files will be stored.

Now, when you have purchased some hosting package, you will receive an email from the hosting company with the details of your account. Usually that’s the access to the hosting admin panel, mail settings, access to the so called “ftp” and the database details. If you have only received the access to the hosting admin panel, don’t worry, as a rule you can make all the necessary settings inside your account and without any special knowledge.

Uploading website files is in general copying website files from your computer to some specific folder on the remote computer (server). But since this computer is located in the other place you need to upload it in a special way, using the FTP program and the FTP access provided by your hosting company. FTP is the file transfer protocol which is a specific way to transfer your files to remote computer.

First you need to have some FTP program on your computer. There are lots of them available online for free (at least the trial versions), if you Google it, you’ll find programs like cuteftp, smartftp, coreftp and lots of others. They all work in a same way, let’s see how you can make it with smartftp for example.

Right below the main menu you’ll see the fields to enter the host name, login and password. This is the access to the FTP that your hosting company has sent you or that you can ask to make for you ( or you can make it on your own from the hosting managing panel).

Now enter your info and click on a green arrow. You will see the program connecting. Once it’s done, you’ll see something like this.

In most cases your website files should be uploaded to “public_html” folder, “www” folder or just to the root depending on your hosting settings and info sent to you in the email. So look for these folder, and if you are not sure, it’s better to check with your hosting company.

Now we’ll show the easiest way to upload the files. Just select all the files that you want to upload, right click with your mouse and choose copy. Then get back to the smartftp and in the white area in the middle of the page ( that shows what files are located on the server) right click with your mouse and choose paste. That’s it, the files will start uploading.

Once you have copied all the files you can go ahead and check your website online typing http://www.mywebsitename.com into the browser line. If your website home page doesn’t come up or you see some error, you need to get in touch with the hosting company to see what’s wrong.

1. Can I “try” the template before making a purchase?

No, it’s not possible to “try” the template. It makes sense to send the template link to your friends, partners, family and get to know what that think about this exact template you have chosen. There’s no difference, whether you see the template on our website or on your domain name so it’s easy to make the decision.

2. How can I edit the template? Is there some place to edit it?

Our templates are the design plus HTML code or flash only. There’s no admin area where you could change the content, place your logo or upload new images. In order to edit the look and layout of the template you have to edit the template source files, which include graphical .psd files (Photoshop), .html files and flash .fla files, if that’s a flash template or a usual template with the flash header animation.

In order to edit these files you’ll need some programs (listed in the Software required section for every template) and you’ll need to know how to actually work with these programs and update the files. If you are not sure you can edit the template on your own, we highly recommend to contact us for the help. For a very affordable fee we will add your logo, content and images on the template pages and will make sure the website is ready to go online.

3. Is it easy to edit the template?
Yes, editing the template is easy but you should have at least the beginner skills working with the programs listed in the Software required section. We have some tutorials in our help center here at www.template-help.com and there are lots of free tutorials available online.

4. I know how to work with the Frontpage, can I edit the template?

If you have chosen a website template or a CSS template and don’t plan updating the graphics (you’re just replacing the texts on pages) then you can. In all the other cases you should have all the programs listed in the Software Required section to be able to customize the template to fit your needs.

5. There’s a search form on the template, it’ll work, right?

No, the search form or the property listings won’t work, that’s just the design element. We do not produce templates with scripts and we don’t program elements like the search form. The only exclusion here are the templates based on the CMS which means a content management system, that is osCommerce, Creloaded, WordPress, phpBB, php-Nuke, Joomla, Mambo and Magento templates.

6. How will you deliver the template?

We don’t ship the discs with the templates. We’ll send you an email with the link to download your template files in about 5 minutes after the purchase has been made and verified by the billing officer. You will be able to download template files during 3 days after template purchase, after that the link will become inactive. If you didn’t have a change to save template files to your computer during this time, feel free to contact us and we’ll resend you the link.

7. What files are included into the template package?

Inside the template zip file you’ll find the following folders: screenshots, site, site_flash (if that’s a flash site) and sources folder. Screenshots folder contains the screenshots of the pages, the site and site_flash folders have the html files or flash file accordingly (that’s the template files that are usually uploaded to the server). The sources folder contains all the template source accordingly, including graphical files, fonts, flash and the clipart library.

8. Can you tell me who have purchased the template before me?

So what’s the on page search engine optimization? We all know that to access our website people have to find it first of all. In which way can they do that? Ok, that’s printed ads, website address on your new business cards, word of mouth or just the banner on some website. That’s fine, but there are also many people looking for a company and some services online via the search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN etc. The on page website optimization is meant for the search engines to better know who you are, what you do and thus show your website in search results for the matching search queries and preferably closer to the top than on one thousand eighteen page of the search results. This is the very first step to the
online success, there’s nothing complicated here and with the help of our article you will be able to do it on your own.

On page search engine optimization consists of 3 main stages:

Finding the right keyword

Keyword is the word or the phrase for which you would like to show up in the search engines results. For example if I’m selling the templates, the keyword that’s associated with my business is the template. But, there’s a competition. If we go to Google and type “template” to the search bar it’ll give me about 181,000,000 results. Wow, that’s a lot and it’s impossible to get on top with such a competition. Hence the conclusion, we need to find the right keywords for our website.

The perfect keyword should be popular but have low competition. If you find one, you are the winner. There are some free tools (and lots of commercial tools) that can help you, but I like most Google keywords suggestion tool: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal. Though it’s not directly meant for searching keywords for your website, it can give you all the info that you need. Enter the keyword you have in mind (it’s better to enter the phrase consisting of 2-3 words) and this tool will show you a long list of similar keywords and the number of searches. Choose several keywords and enter them in Google search bar, then compete the competition and the number of searches. To make sure that’s a good keyword you can calculate the keyword effectiveness index which is the number of daily searches divided to competition. If its’ lower than 0.001 that’s a poor keyword.

It also makes sense to to target your website locally, like say flash templates in Brooklyn. This way your website will definitely show up closer to the top to your targeted audience if they live in Brooklyn and look for the templates in Brooklyn.

You should choose about 2-3 keywords for every page of your website. Of course, the keywords should have something in common with the info from that pages.

Adding keywords on page

Now when we have the keywords ready we should start adding them on pages. It’s most effective to add the keyword to the page title, to the first abstract closer to the beginning and then to the very end of the page.

Don’t overuse the keywords, the density of the keywords should be not more than 3-7%, which means that if you have 100 words on page, there should be not more that 3-7 keywords/keyphrases. Don’t optimize for the search engines only, never forget that people will read this page as well.

Add keywords to special meta tags

Meta tags are special HTML tags that are meant for the search engines as well. If you don’t work with HTML, just ask your developer to add the Title tag and meta description tag on every page of your website.

Info from the title tag is shown at the very top of the page when you view it in a browser. This same text shows up as the title of the page in the search engines. Text in the title tag should consist of about 5-15 words and contain your keywords. You should place them as close to beginning as possible. Always remember that the text in the title should be relevant to the text that you have on page.

Meta description is the short description you write for Google about the web page. Description should be no longer than 20-25 words and should contain your keywords as well. It also may show up in search results as the short description of your website, so make sure it’s good not for the search engines only.

Now, you are ready to go online. Experiment with the keywords and find best ones, change them from time to time to see if you can get even better results.

1. Should I change the logo?

When we say logo we mean some graphic element or icon located next to the company name in the header area of the template. Yes, we definitely recommend to change it and here’s why.

First, though the possibility to see the other website built based on the same template comes almost to zero there’s still a chance that after some deep research or just occasionally one of you customers will see your logo on some other site and will definitely get confused.

Secondly, you can’t use this logo to create the corporate style since all the images in the templates are optimized for 72 dpi resolution which is too low for print, so you should know beforehand that you won’t be able to use this logo for the envelope, letterhead or business card.

If you desperately like the logo, you can order the development of this exact logo in vector or high resolution from us but we recommend to at least make some small change to the logo to make it look different from what’s on the template.

If you consider changing the logo but not ready to spend $500 for a logo yet (and that’s the average that professional logo design studios charges for logo) we highly recommend you to visit our logo templates section. These are great designs with the great concepts worth $21 only. Or you can even purchase the logo at unique price of $70 and be the only owner of an absolutely unique design.

2. Should I change the font of the textual logo?

That’s not necessary at all. First, and it’s a proven fact, every company name looks different even if written in the same font and secondly, you can change the color which is usually enough to make the logo look unique.

3. Do I really have to change that cool photo in the header?

Recommended but not necessarily. You can ask our developer to find the image of that same style from our collection (that’ll be of some additional fee) or you can buy the license to use the other photo on the website from some photo website (just type royalty free stock photos in Google).

When looking for a photo you should remember that you can’t use the images you found in Google or some other search engine as most of them are copyrighted and you don’t need troubles, don’t you?

Keep in mind that good photos can’t be cheap. Don’t be greedy when building your website, that’s the photo they’ll see when opening the home page of your site and the first impression they’ll get from you company accordingly, so think about it before buying something that seems to be cheap and not that bad.

4. Can I use the photo from the header for company brochure or some printed material?

No, and there are 2 reasons why. Our agreements with photo providers allow us use the photo on the template (and the website built from the template) only.

Secondly, photo from the header same as the rest of the images on the template has the 72 dpi resolution which is not enough for print. So, if you’d like to use the same photo on the website and printed material, you’d better replace the photo with your own one or the photo from some proto provider (don’t forget to check on the license and 300 dpi).

5. Photos from the photo galleries or photographer portfolio templates.

Changing the photos is the very first thing you should make. Our stock photos are definitely nice but we use them on a variety of templates, and secondly, if you are not a photographer why would you buy the template of this type?

6. Small photos in the body of the template next to some info.

If you don’t have photos of your team, office interior or say office building for the contact page, just keep them what they are. People are so used to the images of this type that they simply don’t page attention to what’s actually on them.

7. Icons in the menu or packages.

Why not, we can change these icons for you for some small fee. We have a large clip art collection that we constantly update, besides there are lots of free icon sets you can find online, or you can buy an icon set from us.

8. Should I consider using a different illustration?

On your own risk. It’s important to know that some of our templates are built around a single illustration and changing it can make the template look completely different. The only solution here is to order something built in the similar style, either from us or some other studio but showing them the template where the illustration will be placed.

HTML <br> Tag

Use <br> tag for a line brake. Use this tag at the end of the sentence if you need the new one to start from the new line. This tag has no end tag so it’s even easier to use. For example: The next line will start below.<br> New line.

HTML Headings

HTML headings are defined with the <h1> to <h6> tags. For Example: <h1>Welcome to my website</h1>
HTML headings are meant to show what element on your page is the heading. Don’t use this tag to make some text bold.

The headings are very important for the search engines, so use this tag attentively (it’s good to include your keywords to the headings). H1 headings should be used as main headings, followed by H2 headings and then by less important H3 headings accordingly.

HTML Paragraphs

HTML paragraphs are defined with the <p> tag. For Example <p>A new story starts below</p>.

This one is very simple, if you want the line to start from the paragraph, use <p> at the beginning of the phrase and </p> at the end.

HTML Links

HTML links are defined with the <a> tag. For Example <a href=”http://www.templatesheaven.com”>Home page</a>. The links are used in the menu to link to internal website pages and can be used anywhere on the template to link to external websites or pages. The text between >…< is the text that you website visitor will see as a link, while the the href attribute defines the link “address”.

HTML Images

HTML images are defined with the <img> tag. For Example: <img src=”templatesheaven.jpg” />. This tag shows the location of the image on your server or you can use it to show the image from some external location, for example if you want to add the logo of TemplatesHeaven on your website you should use

HTML Text Formatting

<b> tag will make your text bold, for example <b>bold</b>

HTML Tables

If you need to add the table to you webpage you should use <table> tag. HTML Forms and Input

There’s no need to explain what a form is but there’s one thing we want to pay your attention to. The form in HTML is just the number of fields where you can type in the text, but that’s not the script that will send this info to your email or database. The <form> tag defines the form area. <input> tag is the field that has lots of the attributes depending on the content that should be entered to the field. For example just text info:

HTML <textarea> tag

The <textarea> tag defines a multi-line text input control, for example it can be used as the field for the message in your contact form.

HTML <div> tag

This is a more a less new tag and it doesn’t have a separate special definition like link tag for example.
The <div> tag defines a division or a section in an HTML document. If you’re just starting you won’t be able to use it properly on your own, however feel free to edit the elements inside the div section as most often they are the same that we already studied.

HTML <span> tag

same as <div> tag, the <span> tag is pretty new one. The <span> tag provides no visual change by itself but rather provides a way to add a hook to a part of a text or a part of a document. If all you need is changing several lines of text close your eyes on this tag, or if you want to apply that same “effect” to some other element, just copy the <span> tag and attributes to the place you’d like to.

HTML <select> tag

Use the <select> tag to create a drop down list with some options. For example list the locations where your offices are located for your customer to choose:

Once you are in, add a website to the list of your account and generate a special tracking code that you should place on every page of your website. Now you have access to all the multiple reports: Visitors, Traffic sources, Content and Goals.

At the very first page you will see the number of daily visits to your website, countries where people come from to visit your website, places in the internet where people come from, most visited pages, the average time on the website and basically short info about everything most important. Using the menu you can go deeper into details and receive the full info about your website visitors. You can also set the so called goal conversions. Goal conversion is the number of visitors that reach some goal you set. For example you sell something online but you don’t know how many people of those who visited your website actually made a purchase. To know your conversion just add the special code on to your “Thank you” page and check the report to see the results.

Summing up, Google Analytics is the tool that will help you know everything about your website visitors and customers.

Google Webmaster Tools

This free tool will tell you where you are on Google, what are the most popular keywords your website shows up for in Google and on what position. They will also check your website for different types of errors, show you the number of incoming and outgoing links, will list the pages that have been indexed by Google on your website and also show you what Googlebot sees your website like. So this tool is all about your position in Google search results. We know that’s very important to be closer to the top as the higher you are, the more customers you can get.

Here’s the link to get in: www.google.com/webmasters/tools. To verify you’re the website owner (of course they won’t show your stats to other people just because they enter your URL) you’ll have to create a sample HTML page online or add the verification code to the meta on your home page.

This toolbar shows the page rank of the pages, the number of pages indexed on the website by Google, Alexa rank, the date the domain name was registered, the number of external links and many many more. Summing all above said, you need this tool to get a quick access to useful and important SEO information and compare and evaluate the websites of your competitors quickly.

Compete Toolbar

You’ll need this one to get an access to secret info about traffic of your competitors’ websites. Check this link for the toolbar http://tools.compete.com/. The toolbar will show you Compete and Alexa rank for the website if it’s been online for some time and has at least 500 visitors per month. This is not the accurate data but it should give you a good idea where your competitor’s website stands in terms of traffic.

Semrush

Will show you what main keywords your competitors use, on which position they are in Google for these keywords and the average number of searches for the keywords per month. They will also show you the Google Adwords that your competitors use for their business and what’s also important, they will give you a list of the other websites competing for same keyword. This tool will help you to choose from 2 similar search phrases the one that works. For example let’s check WordPress and Mambo and you’ll know what sells better.

Google Keywords Suggestion Tool

You enter some keywords, get the long list of related keywords and check how popular they are among website surfers. If you find one great keyword bringing lots of traffic but for some reason not used by your competitors, that’s your chance to get over your competition.

Google Diagnostics

If you think that your website was banned by Google or your website is not showing up in Google Index (except it haven’t been indexed yet) it’s time to use this tool: http://diagnostics.googlerankings.com. They will help you to understand what you are doing wrong when optimizing your website for Google.  All you have to do is create your Website Diagnostics Panel and see what they tell you. Double click on the Photoshop icon on your desktop or choose it from the list of programs on your computer. Wait till the program loads. In the main program menu choose File>>Open and open the template .psd file from according location on your computer.

Pay attention to the list of layers on the right, for your convenience we have divided it into folders.

Choose the “head” folder…

… and click on it to see the layers inside.

Click on the area with the globe and the layer containing the header image will be highlighted. In case the layers in the template are not combined into folders and you’re not sure where to look for the layer needed, just click on Alt tab on your keypad same time right clicking with the mouse on the area you are interested in and the according layer will be highlighted.

Drag the photo you would like to use to Photoshop with your mouse or choose File>>Open in the main menu and open the photo/image you would like to use in the header. The new Photoshop document will be created automatically. To move the image to the file with the template, choose Copy from the main menu as it is shown on the screenshot below.

Get back to the template .psd file and choose Paste from the main menu. The new layer with the image will be created by default.

To place the layer with your image over the main image in the template header choose Layer in the main menu and move to “Release clipping mask” in the drop down menu as show on the screenshot.

Now you can see that your image has replaced the main image in the template header. If your image was too big and you see only part of it or you do not like the way it looks in the header, choose Edit>>Free transform.

Now you can resize the image or drag it to position needed. Click on enter to save the transformations made.

In order to change text choose the Text tool from the Photoshop tool bar. If you don’t have the fonts needed, copy the fonts that are provided with template sources to fonts folder on your computer and try over again.

Type the new text and click on enter to save the changes.

To save the updated made to the template Photoshop file choose File>>Save as from the main menu and send the file as indicated on the screenshot below. We recommend to give the file a new name just in case you would like to make some updates to the default template file.
